Determination of Biogenic Amines in Bitter Orange
The above is a chromatogram of biogenic amines present in bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) extract. Dr. Mark Roman, President and Technical Director of Tampa Bay Analytical Research, developed and validated the method for the determination of biogenic amines in bitter orange raw materials and dietary supplements through a contract with NIH-ODS, which was published in the Journal of AOAC, 90(1) 2007, 68-81. Prior to this publication, there had been confusion in the industry about whether the principal biogenic amine was p-synephrine or phenylephrine (m-synephrine). Phenylephrine is a mydriatic and decongestant used in pharmaceutical preparations. The large peak in the middle of the chromatogram is p-synephrine. This work clearly showed that the principal biogenic amine in bitter orange is p-synephrine, and phenylephrine is not present in bitter orange above the limit of detection of the method.
